Places we’ve stayed

Introduction

In this section we will post links to the hotels, motels, B&B’s, camp sites (joking!) that we stay in along the way. For most of the accommodation we have used the usual suspects:

www.tripadvisor.com.au

www.booking.com

www.airbnb.com.au   This has been a real find but please note that the accommodation is not like Bed & breakfast accommodation in the UK. Places vary with some accommodation being within the individuals home with little privacy to a three bedroomed house where the owner isn’t present. Some places will provide a full breakfast/continental where others don’t even leave a jug of milk! Our experience though varied has always been positive.

Ibis – Therry Street, Melbourne (www.booking.com)

Central location and walking distance to all that we wanted to look at. Rooms were spotless, with Free wi-fi and helpful staff. Nearby we found:

  • Queen Victoria Market – brilliant for breakfasts and snacks
  • Melbourne City Swimming Pool – relaxing swim in this Victorian swimming pool
  • Aldi supermarket just round the corner
  • Quite a few car hire companies nearby on Franklin Street

Trevor and Laima Sharman, Nelson’s Retreat, Portland (airbnb)

This was our first airbnb experience so we were a little apprehensive. There was no need since Laima & Trevor were both warm and welcoming.

After introductions and a refreshing drink Trevor offered and we accepted a short trip to the Cape Nelson lighthouse to watch the sun set – unmissable.

Laima and Trevor are both skilled hosts giving us privacy when needed. A full breakfast the following day along with useful information on our forward journey and a few goodies to eat on the way.

One tip for others, don’t get there too late or have to leave too early – this really is a beautiful part of the country that shouldn’t be hurried.

We have no hesitation in recommending Laima and Trevor to other airbnb’ers, you won’t be disappointed.

Great Ocean Road Motel, Apollo Bay, Victoria (local tourist information)

Staff were friendly but rooms felt shabby and in need of a face-lift. Wi-fi an extra AUD5

Best Western Motel, Drouin, Victoria (Best Western)

Very clean with friendly staff and comfortable beds. This was one of the best motel chains that we have stayed with – let’s hope the rest of Best Western keep up the same standards. Free wi-fi.

Comfort Inn, Foster, Victoria (Comfort Inn)

Clean and basic rooms, the Luxury one we stayed in was well equipped with large fridge, microwave and toaster.

Nina & Graeme Lakes Entrance Victoria (airbnb)

A friendly welcome by Nina and we soon felt at home in our self contained unit. Following the recommendation of other airbnb’ers we let Nina cook dinner for us which, was wonderful. Nina was able to give us lots of advice on where to visit in the area and even helped plan our onward journey. Our one disappointment was that we didn’t get to meet her husband Graeme as he was away working; he’s a paramedic/ambulance officer and was helping out with the bush fires.

Ibis Canberra (www.ibisstylescanberra.com.au)

This hotel was very clean, with helpful friendly staff. A 4 star low rise hotel, with pool, is ideally located for all Canberra has to offer nestled in a quiet leafy location; we stayed in a king sized room, well equipped with tea making facilities, fridge & free wi-fi.

Sue & Bob Snowgums Bushwalkers delight Katoomba, NSW, AU (airbnb)

Lovely contemporary house perfect location in the Blue Mountains, we had our own separate area of the house with a bed room, small sitting room and kitchen. Sue & Bob were great hosts; a great breakfast of fruit, muesli, toast & juices set us up for the day. Sue is a keen bush walker so was able to provide lots of information on local walks.

 Marj Nelson Bay (airbnb)

Marj our host was friendly and accommodating she welcomed us into her immaculate home and made sure that we had everything we needed; her breakfasts set us up for the day, with lots of cereals, fruit, yogurt, muffins & toast! Ideally located for Nelson Bay and surrounding areas.

Jenny & Andy Billabong Moon Pokolbin Hunter Valley www.billabongmoon.com.au

Billabong Moon is a very special place offering total seclusion & privacy for a romantic getaway, within he heart of the Hunter Valley. The cottage we stayed in was very spacious, well equipped with an abundance of charm & character. Jenny & Andy ensured total privacy but were on hand if needed. We can’t recommend the place highly enough.

Ilana & Grant Randwick Sydney (Airbnb)

This apartment is ideally located across the road from Centennial Park and a 30 minute bus ride or just over an hours walk into the city. The apartment is separate from the main house and is well equipped with microwave, fridge and access to laundry facilities. Our only problem was that there was no Wi fi.
