Transport and accommodation

We’re travelling with another couple around New Zealand in a hire car staying in a mixture of B&Bs, Motels, Hostels and with hosts arranged by AirBnB. Currently the average costs per couple, per night is around £64 and this will include better hotels, mostly we have ‘en suite’ rooms. So far, we’ve come across two examples of poor accommodation where the rooms and building were below standard; the sheets were clean and the people friendly so we stuck it out for 2 nights. The lack of accommodation has extended to the Christchurch / Akaroa areas, which we are having to abandon from our schedule.

In Lake Taupo the hostel manager told a tale of extra tourists coming into the area with little increase in the infrastructure. Campsites were full to capacity and rubbish wasn’t being tidied up. We really hadn’t noticed a massive number of tourists on our travels but had found the picnic sites weren’t equipped like they had been in Australia and bins were frequently overflowing.

The top places we liked so far have been:
