[above – Te Manaroa Springs, the hot springs and pools left us a bit mystified] to A long drag in the car from Tairua down past Taupo, along the lake and on to Taurangi a staging post for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Along the route we went past the Waikite Valley, site of the Te Manaroa Spring, New Zealand’s largest single source of natural boiling water. Pouring out 1800 litres a minute of near boiling (98°Celsius, 208° Fahrenheit) mineral water. Did we stop?, well sort of, car parking and loads of people were putting us off. And to see a load of steam coming out of pools jammed with tourist planning their next coffee stop.
