At the motel this morning we were told about the smoke haze across the area – apparently it’s coming from a mine that has been on fire at Morwell since the weekend. We’ve only just noticed the weather reports mentioning smoke in their forecasts for the area we’re in. Here’s the list of current warnings and incidents in the Victoria District.

When the Australians say ‘off road’ they actually mean it, see the above with railway wheels at front (just visible) and rear. We saw this truck pulled up outside the local coffee shop in Drouin.

Phillip Island

The Nobbies

Home to Australia’s largest seal colony (15,000) of which we failed to spot one! Lots of breeding dwarf penguins in their little boxes that we did see.

Echidnas

We saw this little chappy happily wandering across the road and by the time we got the camera out all that was left in view was it’s bum!

Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit

We popped in for a look round but didn’t see anything worth staying for. We couldn’t see the track without waiting for a 2 pm guided walk (AUD20). There was Go Karting and Slot Car Racing, not being enthusiasts we made our apologies and left.

Koala Sanctuary

Fish Creek

is a quirky fish themed village and the entry point to Waratah Bay and Sandy Point; the township is easily identified by the oversized mullet sitting atop the local hotel [Cartoscope Coastal Explorer, www.maps.com.au]
