[above – these irigation systems are seen everywhere in New Zealand, God knows what the hobbits made of them] Today we hired some bikes including an electric bike for Sue and set off along the Otago Central Rail Trail. Named after the old railway line, built between 1891 and 1907, the track runs through an old gold mining area, remnants of which can be found along the track e.g. abandoned mining machinery, old stone and mud brick dwellings, tunnels (no gold though!); the whole trial is 150kms we managed about 25 in temperatures well into the 20s before we found a café (any excuse for a slice of carrot cake!). Sue’s electric bike proved a great success the rest of us struggling to keep up as she made speeds approaching 20mph! Go Billy Whizz …
