Our last day in Auckland and New Zealand and we were left with only a few hours to wander round before catching the bus for the Airport. We just happened to notice the cemetery opposite the hotel we were staying in and popped in for look round only to find that Captain William Hobson RN (26 September 1792 – 10 September 1842), the first Governor of New Zealand and co-author of the Treaty of Waitangi was buried here. Hobson asserted British sovereignty over the whole of New Zealand, despite not everyone signing the Treaty.
