Above, binmen take a break on Waiheke Island.
Waiheke Island is 11 miles by ferry from Auckland, in the Hauraki Gulf. With nearly 9,000 residents it’s New Zealand’s most populated island. Rated the fifth best destination in the world and the fourth best island in the world by Condé Nast we had to go and check it out. There are lots of second homes here for the rich but it also has a reputation for alternative lifestyle with losts of artists resident. Around 2,000 people commute daily to Auckland. Lots of people retire here and we were told as a result the median income is quite low compared to the rest of New Zealand. However house prices are very high.
